The Line Training Restaurant Still Lists Opening as Coming Soon

Service!’s downtown Columbus training restaurant remains listed as coming soon, making its program clearer than its opening timetable.

The Line, a planned restaurant and hospitality-training center at 145 North Grant Avenue in downtown Columbus, still lacks a confirmed public opening date. Operator Service! describes the project as coming soon, while earlier reports targeting summer or August should now be treated as estimates rather than an opening announcement.

The official page does not give an opening day

Service!’s program page lists The Line and its Innovation Kitchen as coming soon. It describes a restaurant that will operate as a live demonstration of hospitality work while employees receive mentoring in dining-room, beverage and kitchen roles.

That language establishes the operator’s plan, not a completed opening. An earlier version of this story said The Line was nearing an August debut, but CREN did not find a dated opening notice on the official page during this review.

The organization lists 145 North Grant Avenue as its mailing address for The Line. The site is in downtown Columbus near the Discovery District, but the available sources do not establish a broader effect on surrounding rents, property values or redevelopment.

The training model builds on Café Overlook

Service! says its existing Café Overlook operates on the 16th floor of the Franklin County Courthouse. The café combines weekday food service with front-of-house and back-of-house training, job coaching and worker supports.

The Line is intended to extend that model into a full-service restaurant. Columbus Monthly’s June report said the initial restaurant would seat about 100 people, with a patio and incubator kitchen planned for later.

The same report identified chef and Service! co-founder Matthew Heaggans as executive chef. Those program details are attributed plans until the restaurant opens and begins enrolling or employing participants under the described model.

Plans include education and an incubator

What Now Columbus reported that the project was designed for roughly 80 indoor seats, a 40-seat patio and an eight-seat chef’s table. Those figures differ from the rounder initial-capacity description in Columbus Monthly, underscoring that pre-opening plans can change.

What Now also reported planned education partnerships and a future incubator for food entrepreneurs. Its June article said construction was expected to finish by July 1, with public programming later in the summer; the outlet noted that it had sought additional opening information from Service!.

Because the official page still says coming soon, CREN is not treating the construction estimate as proof that the restaurant is complete or licensed for service.

What readers can verify next

The project’s public value will depend on execution: a confirmed opening, published program eligibility, paid-training terms, cohort size and evidence that participants move into more stable work. The current materials describe the mission but do not provide outcome data for The Line because it has not publicly opened.

The next reliable checkpoint is a dated notice from Service! giving the first service day and explaining how workers can enter the training program. Until then, the project remains a documented plan with an unresolved schedule.
